Redirect checker: what’s checked
Redirects are how a site keeps old URLs working, but each extra hop slows the page down and dilutes the signals passed to the destination. A redirect that lands on an error loses the visitor entirely.
This checker follows your redirects hop by hop, starting with the ones that matter most — your root URL and the HTTP and www variants of it — and reports where each chain ends up.
4 Redirects A redirect that loops, chains or lands on an error wastes crawl budget and loses visitors on the way. These checks follow where your redirects actually end up.
-
Internal links pointing at redirects
The link in your markup is stale: it points at a URL that redirects, costing every visitor an extra round trip and the crawler an extra fetch. Update the link to the final destination.
-
Redirect chain on root URL
Multiple hops before the final URL waste time and dilute link signals. Redirect straight to the destination in one step.
-
Redirect chains between pages
Each hop is a round trip before anything appears, and search engines spend crawl budget on the URLs in between. Chains usually build up from separate rules for https, www and trailing slashes; point the first redirect straight at the final URL.
-
Redirects landing on an error page
Someone set up these redirects on purpose and their targets have since moved or been deleted, so visitors who follow a promise that content moved land on an error. Repoint each redirect at a page that exists, or remove it.

Frequently asked questions
What is a redirect chain?
A redirect that points to another redirect before reaching the final page, e.g. http → https → www → final URL. Each hop adds latency; pointing straight at the final URL fixes it.
What does “redirect landing on an error” mean?
A URL that redirects somewhere that then returns a 404 or server error. The visitor follows the redirect and still hits a dead end — the redirect needs a new target.
Does it check HTTP to HTTPS and www?
Yes, in the same audit: it checks that plain HTTP redirects to HTTPS and that the www and non-www versions resolve to one address. It also finds internal links that point at a redirect instead of the final URL.
